The original Aspiring Hut, crafted from local river stones in 1949, required substantial earthquake strengthening. The New Zealand Alpine Club (NZAC), as custodian of the facility, opted not only to bolster its structural integrity but also to undertake a comprehensive refurbishment.

A diverse team comprising consultants, builders, and architects—each with a passion for the outdoors—was assembled to preserve the historic stone walls while devising a solution that prioritized swift construction, minimized the environmental impact, and was suitable for the remote location. PTL engineers worked closely alongside architects and builders to strengthen the existing walls using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panels. These same panels, in combination with glulam, were utilized to replace the aging roof.

The innovative timber structural system not only supports the stone façade but also enhances the hut’s architectural aesthetics, offering a pleasing retreat for adventurers in the backcountry.
